Apprentices develop confidence in navigating SEND legislation, statutory guidance, and school policies. The module focuses on balancing rights, responsibilities, and ethical considerations to ensure safe, compliant, and effective support.

Planning & curriculum

This module supports apprentices to collaborate with teachers and adapt curriculum delivery for diverse needs. Learners use their SEND expertise to help all pupils access learning and engage meaningfully with the curriculum.

SEND excellence

Apprentices deepen their understanding of the broad range of SEND needs and learn how to model outstanding support. The module focuses on raising the standard of provision and embedding best practice across the school.

Classroom assessment

This module develops skills in observing and assessing pupil progress to inform timely interventions. Apprentices learn how to provide constructive feedback to pupils, teachers, and families, supporting effective learning outcomes.

Apprentices build strong relationships with families and act as a key link between home and school. The module also develops confidence in working with professionals and contributing to Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) reviews.

Lead, coach & grow

This module prepares apprentices to take the lead in SEND support and share expertise with colleagues. Learners reflect on their own development and build coaching skills to help others improve their practice.

Gateway to completion

Apprentices review progress, prepare their portfolio, and confirm readiness for End Point Assessment. The final stage includes a professional discussion and project showcasing impact on SEND practice.

How it works

Programme structure

1. Practical period (On Programme Learning)

Apprentices develop their knowledge, skills, and behaviours through a combination of structured learning and practical application in their setting. They are supported by a Programme Lead and workplace mentor.

2. Gateway

Once the apprentice has gathered the necessary evidence and demonstrated competence across all areas, the employer and Programme Lead agree they are ready for EPA.

3. End Point Assessment (EPA)

The EPA is carried out by an external assessor and includes:

  • A professional discussion
  • A practical observation within the apprentice’s setting

Assessment

Assessment is continuous throughout the programme via tasks, evidence logs, practical activities, and reflections, culminating in the formal EPA to determine the overall apprenticeship grade.
